Liceo Espigas

The high school, which opened in 2016, incorporated its fourth group in 2019, making up a total of 275 students from 1st to 4th grades of Secondary First Cycle. Liceo Espigas is a full time and free high school, managed by Liceo Espigas Civil Association and located at Avda. de las Instrucciones 4532, in the Puntas de Manga area.

Fundación Retoño has funded the high school's construction and equipment and also takes care of its operating costs with contributions from US donors.

To include a high school among our many projects has been Retoño's founder, Nina von Maltzahn's long time dream, in order to complete the Foundation's mission of providing a full cycle in the education of children and youth who live in a very vulnerable socioeconomic environment.

Prof. Ernesto Egaña has been appointed as Liceo Espigas' Principal. He personally selected and trained the staff teams and designed the educational platform of the high school.

In 2015, a new project called Simiente started activities at the Espigas Centre. It is aimed at children who are studying 6th grade at public primary schools in the area. As of 2016, 5th graders will also be included in the programme, making a total of 150 pre-teenagers, split in two shifts, one after and the other before school hours. The educational approach is focused on strengthening what the children learn at their regular schools, developing their social abilities and motivating 5th and 6th graders to have a successful experience at Liceo Espigas.
